The twice-weekly market in Gisors, the historic capital of the Normandy-Vexin region, is another gem, combined with a visit to the town’s 11th century fortress and Rue de Vienne’s half-timbered houses and shops.

Spend time in Normandy’s largest forest, Forêt de Lyons, and venture to the gorgeous village of Lyons-la-Forêt, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, then admire the roses in the famous village of Gerberoy which has inspired so many artists over the years. Of course, one of the main draws of this region is Monet’s gardens in Giverny, reached in only half an hour by car.

Other must-sees include Château Gaillard in Les Andelys, the gastronomic restaurants and galleries of historic Rouen and maybe even the Pays de Caux beaches near Dieppe.
